====== Shadecrawlers ====== > Shadecrawlers just wanna have fun! ---- Shadecrawlers are the native inhabitants of the Sunshade Desert. They are an arachnoid species resembling real-world OC scorpions. Like scorpions, they are naturally armoured and prefer to stay in the shade. Unlike scorpions, they are furgivores that mainly feed on the juicy fruits of the Desert. They have multiple pairs of limbs, two of which they use for walking. They have pincers and stingers, but culturally have discouraged the use of it against others except for self-defence. Having been isolated from most of Mydreign until relatively recently (a few generations), Shadecrawlers may not be fully familiar with the cultural expectations of other Mydreignites, but they are very friendly, and are always down to befriend someone willing to party and/or play cards with them. ===== Society & Culture ===== Shadecrawlers are a generally laidback (perhaps even hedonistic) species devoted to Life. They put emphasis on living in the moment, and are known for their game centres, as well as festivities and celebrations. The most important of these celebrations is the Day of Life, an annual celebration of life in the desert, where Shadecrawlers go on a pilgrimage to the Temple of Life. This year is particularly important, as the Lifekeeper has announced that the extremely rare desert rain is expected very soon. When Shadecrawlers are travelling across the Desert or are generally out of the safety of the shade, they wear plenty of flowy fabrics and big hats to avoid direct contact with the sunlight. Hats are particularly in fashion. Most Shadecrawlers are born with no particular pattern across their body, though it is not uncommon to be born with some kind of marking. These markings are often said to be predictive of one’s fate in life -- though the specific interpretation of such patterns can vary between individuals. Examples of markings and potential interpretations include: large dark blobs that may look like boulders, symbolising a Shadecrawler who mines luxite; blue waves travelling throughout one's back, symbolising a Shadecrawler who works in the irrigation systems. ===== Creating a Shadecrawler ===== Shadecrawlers very closely resemble real-world scorpions, but are able to have more fantastical details. They can come in all sorts of colours -- typically earthy colours such as browns and reds, but also in more exotic colours like blue and purple -- and may have markings or patterns. They may have large or small pincers, thin or thick tails, long or stout abdomens. When creating a Shadecrawler, tell us these physical details: what do they look like? Do they have any patterns on their body, and if so, how does it relate (or not relate) to their Role? ==== Naming Conventions ==== Shadecrawlers usually have two names and are 1–2 syllables each. Families do not pass on their names: rather, each Shadecrawler is given a unique name to emphasize their individuality, though characters unrelated to one another may end up with similar names (first and/or last). It is not uncommon for Shadecrawlers to change names throughout their life. Shadecrawler names are mainly made of plosives and fricatives. Examples: Dzon Doe, Shon Pol, Khashi Kno, Tala Dyas. If your Shadecrawler is a respected leader or part of a specialised profession, they may choose to use a compound name that summarises their responsibility. For example, the lead of a Desert farm may be called the Strengthsteward. Someone who mines luxite may be called Lightgatherer. ==== Traits ==== All Shadecrawlers start out with the following: * You are naturally armoured with a tough exoskeleton, so it is harder to scratch you up in combat and in day-to-day life. * You are endowed with Darkvision, able to see dim light in complete darkness and bright light in dim light.
